Novacorr offers a concise, step-by-step protocol aimed at safely assisting a patient from a lying (bed-resting) position to seated or standing positions. These guidelines are particularly useful in home care scenarios using Novacorr’s adjustable beds and chairs. Key steps include:
Encourage Self-Movement Where Possible
Patients who can reposition themselves should be encouraged to do so regularly to prevent issues like blood clots and muscle wasting. However, caregiver assistance may still be needed.
Turning a Patient in Bed
Stand on the side toward which you’ll rotate the patient.
Lift the far leg and cross it over the other.
Position their nearest arm out to the side to avoid compression.
Place one hand on the shoulder, the other on the hip, and gently roll them toward you.
Use pillows or cushions to maintain comfort and correct positioning.
Transitioning from Bed to Chair or Standing
Place the chair (or wheelchair) near the head of the bed; lock wheels and move foot rests if needed.
Roll the patient onto their side facing you using the technique above.
If they can assist, have them bend their legs and prop up on their elbow. Use one hand behind their knees and the other on their back to help pull them to the bed's edge.
Stabilize the pelvis and help them swing their legs off the bed and sit upright with feet flat on the floor.
Stand in front, have them place their hands on your shoulders, and brace your knees. On the count of three, pull them up into standing.
Assist them to walk, or pivot them (back facing the chair) and gently lower them into it.
